I am an alien. I have lived several lifetimes on other planets
and am currently inhabiting this one for the mere experience of it. All
of my stories have actually taken place in other realities to which I am
telepathically linked.
Do you believe this? No? That’s strange, because my family
members are all nodding thoughtfully at this point and murmuring, “Ah. That explains a lot.”
Here are the facts for this lifetime: The oldest of four children,
I was born in Tyler, Minnesota, in 1973. When I was fifteen, we moved
to Rapid City, South Dakota, where I live now. I have done a stint as a
supervisor of grades 3-6 at a Christian school; a gift shop retail clerk;
a library page (that’s a job, not a book part); and a library aide (one step
up from a page). I currently work at a used bookstore.
I am not married, nor do I have children. I am an aunt, however, and do an exceptional job of babysitting, spoiling, and corrupting nephews and niece. The blame for one nephew’s current fascination with Stargate rests squarely upon me.
I began writing at age eleven (or so). During the next several years, I wrote an assortment of novel fragments about the life I wished I had, which meant the popular boy met the shy girl and found out what a terrifically cool person she actually was. I also wrote sequels to whatever books I was reading at the time. You may thank whatever Higher Power you have that I don’t plan to share any of those tortured attempts.
I discovered science fiction and fantasy by accident. Sometime after the move to Rapid City, I watched the movie “Star Trek: Generations” with some friends. Having no concept of a holodeck, I spent the first hour just trying to understand how we had gone from a spaceship to an 18th century sailing vessel to another spaceship. But something about the movie hooked me. After I had read every Star Trek and Star Wars novel I could find, I moved on to Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, and others. Today, I enjoy stories that focus on characters (not science), especially those revolving around the clash of cultures between humans and aliens. Since that fateful movie night, science fiction and fantasy has become my true writing niche.
